In Memory of Gary Kleiman
The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) mourns the loss of friend and colleague, Gary Kleiman, former Senior Director of Medical Development for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), who passed away from complications of diabetes at the age of 70.
Diagnosed at the age of six, Gary directed his passion for life and extraordinary energy to the fight for a cure for this devastating disease. An accomplished artist and tennis player, he had to abandon those hobbies as his eyesight began to fail in his early twenties.
In 1973, Gary testified in front of a Congressional Committee about the impact diabetes had on his life and the life of others. He quickly became an incredibly articulate and effective spokesperson about diabetes, and a beacon of hope for everyone who met him…especially the children and their families. His sense of humor and “A-Positive” attitude were contagious, and his fundraising abilities helped propel the DRI in its mission to find a cure.
“Gary’s impact on the Diabetes Research Institute and the field as a whole is indelible,” said DRIF CEO, Michael Burton. “We are grateful beyond measure for his deep commitment to our mission and honor his extraordinary legacy.”
Our most sincere condolences to the Kleiman family. The family requests that donations in Gary’s memory be directed to the Gary Kleiman Fund at the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.
